Day 31: Nauru Awareness Day!Nauru is a tiny island all alone in the middle of the Pacific. Today let them know they’re not completely forgotten by sending the President a friendly postcard at Office of President, c/o Ministry of Works, Yaren Nauru.
*Political Update: Nauru became independent as a republic in 1968 and joined the Commonwealth as a special member, which means they make a voluntary contribution toward the running of the Secretariat.
*Sadly Nauru is in mortal danger form rising sea levels in the Pacific, due to global warming. In October 2000, a draft report from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) predicted that they average global temperature could be 11 degrees Fahrenheit higher by the year 2100. This means Nauru and other Pacific islands could disappear under the waves; indeed some atolls in nearby Kiribati and Tuvalu have already been drowned. Don’t mention this in your postcard however as its a bit of a downer; certainly Naureans would consider this a faux pas.
*Six time President of Nauru, Bernard Dowiyogo (1946-2003)
Today I sent out a bunch of mail that will probably make my postal worker a bit curious. I FINALLY sent out my serial killer letter, my Dalai Lama donation and reincarnation request, as well as my postcard to Nauru from NYC. Although, when I was looking at pictures of this tiny place, I’m sure the people of this Republic are quite happy to be in Nauru and not NYC. It seems like such a stress free and beautiful little island! To learn more about this place go here: Nauru.
